Students gather in 240 Student Union to create their paintings. In this case, they used canvases as the base for their paintings.

Sand paintings are very intentional, from the colors to the symbols that are used.

A delicate touch is needed when applying the sand to achieve the desired effect.

The design begins to take shape.

Bright pink sand is sprinkled over this painting.

And then the excess is dumped away to reveal the artist's name.

The activity offered students a chance to relax and appreciate this art, as well as learn about the ethnic groups that practice it and its religious and artistic uses.

Native American Heritage Month

November is Native American Heritage Month, and last week the Intercultural and Diversity Center offered students the opportunity to learn about and try sand painting. This art form uses finely crushed materials, which are typically applied to plywood, to depict a scene. Photos: Douglas Levere
