University Communications photographer Meredith Forrest Kulwicki stumbled upon this odd scene: ladybugs and yellowjackets just hanging out on a campus bench. Ever curious, Kulwicki consulted an expert — Andrea M. Keeler, clinical assistant professor in the Department of Biological Sciences — to find out what would bring these two species together. Among the possible reasons: The black part of the bench is a warm spot for the ectothermic insects. Or perhaps something sweet, like soda, was spilled, attracting both as they prepare for winter.
