Heal and help

Internal medicine (IM) residents from the Jacobs School gathered at the downtown bus station last week before starting rounds with UB HEALS to check on unhoused people and distribute sleeping bags. The IM residents from the Advocacy Committee conducted a year-long campaign to collect donations to purchase the sleeping bags. “Despite rigorous clinical coursework, these residents demonstrated their commitment to serving their community and the desire for a new generation of physicians to be community advocates,” says Ariba Hashmi, advocacy champion for the IM residency program. Organized by Hashmi and Archana Mishra, clinical associate professor of medicine, the idea was to get students and residents working together through engagement with the community.
