University Police will host a free bike rodeo this month to help children build bicycle safety skills while enjoying a fun, hands-on learning experience.

The event, open to children ages 11 and younger regardless of riding experience, will take place July 27 from 5:30-7 p.m. in the Bissell Hall parking lot on the North Campus.

Led by University Police officers and supervisors, the bike rodeo will provide young riders with an opportunity to practice real-world bicycle safety skills in a controlled environment. Participants will learn how to maneuver safely, brake properly, navigate simulated roadways and recognize common hazards, while also gaining an understanding of basic traffic rules and safe riding practices.

“The State University of New York frequently provides police bicycle-patrol training for law enforcement agencies across Western New York,” Kimberly Beaty, chief of police, says.

“As part of our commitment to community engagement, we want to ensure that our youngest riders have the skills they need to stay safe. As children head out to enjoy their bikes, we want to do our part to help them keep safety in mind. Our goal is to help junior riders build the confidence and awareness necessary to ride safely, while also strengthening the relationships we share with the communities we serve.”

The bike rodeo is designed to help prevent bicycle-related injuries by teaching safe riding habits early, through fun activities. Participants will rotate through stations that focus on stopping, turning, obstacle navigation and other practical skills, and will have the opportunity to win prizes. Officers also will provide guidance on proper helmet fit and basic bicycle safety checks.

University Police encourages employees to register their children because the event:

  • Teaches real-world bicycle safety skills and traffic awareness.
  • Helps build safe riding habits that can reduce injuries and crashes.
  • Provides hands-on learning through obstacle courses and realistic scenarios.
  • Promotes confidence and independence in young riders.
  • Offers a safe environment for children to practice before riding on streets and in traffic.
  • Encourages healthy, active lifestyles through outdoor activity.
  • Strengthens relationships between youth, families and law enforcement.

The event is free to attend. All participants are required to bring a bike, a bike helmet and a signed waiver. The waiver form can be found online.

Parents or guardians must remain with their children throughout the program. Families should park in the Special Events parking lot and walk to the Bissell Hall parking lot.

Check-in will begin at 5:30 p.m., with participants expected to arrive no later than 5:45 p.m. to allow time for waiver verification and orientation before activities begin.

To register, complete the online form by July 17.
