UB to adopt new addressing format

Under the new campus addressing format, physical street addresses — such as 160 Hayes Road for the Pharmacy Buiilding — will be associated with all buildings, parking lots and other important points of interest on UB's three campuses. Photo: Douglas Levere

Over the next few months, the UB community can expect to see new physical addresses associated with every building and parking lot across all campuses.

The change comes from efforts to improve emergency response capabilities. Over the past few years, University Facilities has worked to identify and implement physical street addresses for buildings, parking lots and other important points of interest. These addresses have been incorporated into 911 systems, ensuring a dispatchable location is automatically provided to the public safety answering point.

These new addresses will be noted on signs outside each building and door numbers will be installed on building entrances. University Facilities will work directly with facilities planning and management officers to incorporate door numbering into day-to-day operations.

The new addresses will also make UB more accessible to visitors and delivery drivers who are not familiar with the campuses and will improve the ability for individuals to locate destinations when using mapping and navigation services such as Google Maps and Apple Maps.

As part of the change, Tonga Pham, associate vice president, University Facilities, formed a committee that worked with the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) to identify the proper way to state addresses when sending mail through Campus Mail or USPS.

Here is an example of the new addressing format:

More information on the new mailing address format can be found here.

The committee is now working to implement these address changes across various university systems. Many employees may have already begun adopting this format, since it’s required by certain third-party vendors.

Currently, both formats are accepted, but faculty and staff are encouraged to begin using the new addresses. All building street addresses can be found on the Campus Mail website.

The committee will continue to share information with the community as changes occur. In the meantime, UB faculty and staff are encouraged to check their UB Online Directory entries and notify their unit business or human resources office if updates are needed.
