After two years of virtual celebration due to the pandemic, the UB community will gather in person later this month to recognize the achievements of the university’s undergraduate and graduate students at the 18th annual Celebration of Student Academic Excellence.

The two-part event will take place on April 27 in two new locations: the Student Showcase will be held from 1-2:45 p.m. in Alumni Arena, with the Celebration Ceremony following at 3:30 p.m. in the Student Union Theatre.

“The Celebration of Student Academic Excellence is one of the highlights of the spring semester,” notes Graham Hammill, vice provost for academic affairs and dean of the Graduate School. “It gives us the opportunity as a university to come together to honor our students for their research activities and their academic accomplishments.

“After two years of holding the celebration remotely, it will be especially gratifying to celebrate in person.”

At the Student Showcase, more than 230 graduate and undergraduate students who took part in mentored research, scholarship, and creative and community projects during the current academic year will present their work. A list of presenters, project titles and abstracts is available on the celebration website.

The Celebration Ceremony will feature a welcome by President Satish K. Tripathi, remarks by Provost A. Scott Weber and on-stage recognition of students in several categories:

  • National scholarships and fellowships, among them the Goldwater scholarship, Marshall scholarship, NSF Graduate Research Fellowship and Fulbright scholarship, among others.
  • SUNY awards, including the Chancellor’s Awards for Student Excellence and the SUNY Scharps Legal Essay Award.
  • UB awards, including the Excellence in Research, Scholarship and Creativity Award; Sigma Xi “Companions in Zealous Research” Award; Clifford C. Furnas Scholar-Athlete Award; Outstanding PhD Dissertation Award; and the Three Minute Thesis Award.

A full list of honorees is available on the celebration website.
