Bies named fellow of International Society for Pharmacometrics

Robert Bies, associate professor in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, was named a 2020 fellow of the International Society for Pharmacometrics (ISoP).

The fellowship recognizes outstanding professional and scientific contributions to the global pharmacometrics community and sustained volunteer service to ISoP.

Bies’ research focuses on the application of pharmacometrics in psychiatry, oncology, neurology and cardiovascular disease. He also studies novel methods development, including machine learning approaches to model selection and optimization methods for parameter optimization in dynamic systems.

He was a board member of ISoP from 2014-17, and served as a founding member of the ISoP Statistics and Pharmacometrics Interest Group. He currently serves on the organization’s education committee.

Bies is also abstract screening chair of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists’ Clinical Pharmacology and Translational Research section, as well as section chair of its Pharmacometrics Focus Group.

He has published more than 70 research articles in academic journals, and is the North American and executive editor of the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology. Bies is also on the editorial boards of the Journal of Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics, Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics: Pharmacometrics and Systems Pharmacology, and Biopharmaceutics and Drug Disposition.

In addition to his appointment at the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Bies is a faculty member of the UB Institute for Computational and Data Sciences, and is a research scientist at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, a teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Toronto.

Bies holds a PhD in pharmacology from Georgetown University, a PharmD from the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy from the University of Toronto.
