UB faculty member Bruce R. Troen has been honored by the Amherst Senior Citizens Foundation (ASCF) with its Senior Leadership Award.

The award recognizes an individual or organization that has demonstrated outstanding leadership by promoting and developing activities that provide a favorable climate for seniors within the community.

Troen, professor of medicine and chief of the Division of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at UB, is an expert in geriatrics with a background in molecular biology and biochemistry.

He helped found and is director of UB’s Center for Successful Aging, an interdisciplinary center that seeks to conduct community-responsive research among UB faculty and community partners to solve challenges facing older adults.

“The center’s goal is to facilitate the translation of research quickly into local and regional policy and practice, helping to make Buffalo and Western New York the best place to age for its residents,” Troen says.

The center recently partnered with the city of Buffalo to research, develop and deploy solutions to the challenges facing older adults.

At UB, Troen studies the biology of aging, frailty, osteoporosis and vitamin D. As chief of the Division of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine, he works with faculty to oversee geriatric and palliative medicine fellowships, as well as training for medical students and residents focused on geriatrics, palliative care and end-of-life care and communication.

Troen is a physician-investigator with the Veterans Affairs Western New York Healthcare System and director of geriatrics services at Erie County Medical Center. He is also co-director of UB’s Center of Excellence in Alzheimer’s Disease and an investigator on SNAP, the SUNY Network Aging Partnership: Investigating Frailty and Enhancing Lifespan Across the Health Spectrum, both funded by New York State.

Troen was honored at the ASCF’s 26th Anniversary Celebration on Oct. 20. Sponsored by BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York, the annual event recognizes those who have made a significant contribution of their time and talents to positively affect the lives of local seniors.

All proceeds benefit the ASCF, which is dedicated to supporting the welfare of senior citizens, and helping to maintain and raise funds to support senior services and activities in the Town of Amherst.
