Homecoming and Family Weekend: More than just a game

UB will celebrate Homecoming and Family Weekend, two of the most traditional of college events, Oct. 11-14 with a variety of activities that should appeal to students, their family members and alumni alike.

In addition to the annual carnival and bonfire on Friday night and the big game against the Akron Zips on Saturday, visitors can take part in interactive sessions on entrepreneurship, a talk with the founder of New York Fashion Week and a presentation on medical humanities.

Among the highlights:

All You’d Like to Know about Being an Entrepreneur
8:30-10:30 a.m., Oct. 11

Learn about entrepreneurship — from resources and tools available to how to promote your business on social media — and hear from entrepreneurs who have successfully launched their new ventures. This interactive session is led by Thomas Ulbrich, executive director of UB’s Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership and assistant dean in the School of Management.       

A Liver Walked into a Doctor’s Office
Noon to 2:15 p.m., Oct. 11

Enjoy lunch and a presentation by Linda Pessar, professor emerita of psychiatry and director of Center for Medical Humanities in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences Learn how medical humanities has evolved as a discipline, using the arts, humanities, ethics and social sciences to teach techniques of observation, analysis and self-reflection. Tours of the new home of the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences on the Downtown Campus will be available following the presentation.

Lessons Learned with Fern Mallis
6-8:30 p.m., Oct. 11

Fern Mallis, BFA ’69, creator of New York Fashion Week, will share her UB experiences and how they prepared her for a successful career in the fashion industry. President of Fern Mallis LLC, an international fashion and design consultancy, she previously was the executive director of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) and senior vice president of IMG Fashion. A reception with refreshments will precedes her talk.

LGBTQ Student Dinner in Celebration of National Coming Out Day
6-8 p.m., Oct. 11

An opportunity for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ) and ally communities to connect. Enjoy local cuisine and discussions open to all UB students, staff, faculty and alumni.

UB Alumni Association Achievement Awards
6 p.m., Oct. 12

President Satish K. Tripathi and the UB Alumni Association Board of Directors will honor UB’s most celebrated alumni and their achievements in the workplace and in our community. The award ceremony includes a sit-down dinner.

Tickets for the Homecoming game against the Akron Zips are available online. Special packages are available for UB alumni and families. Kickoff time has yet to be announced. Two hours before kickoff, Night Ranger will perform the free Tailgate Concert in Stampede Square.
