UB has been named to the list of the Top 10 Military-Friendly Schools among Tier 1 research institutions in the U.S. for 2018-19 by MilitaryFriendly.com.
The list honors institutions that provide the best opportunities for veterans and their spouses by evaluating the many factors that help make colleges, universities and other institutions a good fit for military veterans and their families.
UB was ranked No. 9.
Those included in the list were evaluated using public data sources and a survey completed by the school, as well as student survey data. Student retention, graduation, job placement, loan repayment, persistence and loan default rates also were taken into account.
More than 1,400 schools participated in the survey, which is open to all post-secondary schools that wish to participate. Tier 1 research institutions are doctoral degree-granting universities that engage in the highest research activity.
“While it is certainly gratifying to know that the work we do here at the University at Buffalo has been recognized by MilitaryFriendly.com and other national publications, what is most rewarding is being able to serve these men and women who have sacrificed so much for our country and help them be successful at UB,” says Daniel Ryan, director of veteran services.
UB opened an Office of Veterans Services in 2013 to ease the transition of veterans to the university and to serve as a central point of contact and referral for veterans and family members looking for resources and information about academic advisement, financial aid and career services.
UB assists about 500 graduate and undergraduate students — 180 veterans, 81 active duty service members and 230 who are a spouse or dependent of a service member.
In 2016, UB was ranked No. 77 among four-year institutions by Military Times and No. 64 among the Best Colleges for Veterans by U.S. News and World Report.
The 2018-19 Military Friendly Schools list appears in the May issue of G.I. Jobs magazine. It also can be found at MilitaryFriendly.com.
