Members of the professional staff who joined UB during the past year were welcomed to the university by the Professional Staff Senate (PSS) on Oct. 11 at the organization’s annual welcome reception and lunch.

Thirty-five of the roughly 156 new professional staff hired between August 2011 and August 2012 attended the event to network, hear from President Satish K. Tripathi and learn about volunteer opportunities with the PSS, UB’s governance body for professional staff members.

In addition to listening to Tripathi’s remarks and sitting for a group photo, employees met the PSS’ officers, members of the executive committee and committee chairs, who spoke briefly about the senate’s work.

According to Anne Marie Swartz, chair of the senate’s Welcoming Committee, the organization wants to continue offering resources and counsel to UB’s professional employees, and the event was an opportunity to reach out and engage potential future senate leaders and participants.

“We’re looking for new employees, and employees with a history at UB, to be part of our ongoing work, including a mentor program we are developing and our bi-annual staff development event currently being planned,” said Swartz.

Swartz also mentioned there are opportunities for employees to serve on 10 additional standing PSS committees, which are posted on the organization’s website .

The PSS looks out for the interests of all professional staff members working on state, UB Foundation and Research Foundation lines. The PSS actively participates in the policy decisions of the university and promotes individual professional development.
