As part of Sustainability Month in April, UB recognized outstanding individuals and departments who exhibit a sincere commitment to transforming UB’s campuses into a holistically sustainable community.

The Sustainability Leadership, Innovation and Collaborative Engagement (SLICE) Award recipients were honored as part of the university’s celebration of Earth Day on April 22. SLICE Awards are given out in six categories.

“For over a decade, UB’s Sustainability Leadership Innovation and Collaborative Engagement Awards, known as SLICE, have provided an opportunity to recognize and uplift the exceptional sustainability work taking place across our university community,” said Laura Hubbard, vice president for finance and administration, who handed out this year’s awards.

“Once again, we’ve created unique awards by repurposing a piece of our campus so that our winners can always have a part of UB with them,” Hubbard said. “This year’s SLICE award is made of reclaimed wood that represents the nature-based climate solutions UB is investing in and commemorates the planting of UB’s new microforest near the GRoW Clean Energy Center.”

This year’s SLICE recipients are:

  • Staff: Tyler Bauer, organizational change management specialist, Employee Engagement and Success.
  • Student: Genevieve Fontana, sustainability leadership master’s student (2026).
  • Faculty: Dorothy Siaw-Asamoah, clinical professor, Department of Organization and Human Resources, School of Management and faculty director, Center for Leadership and Global Impact.
  • Alumni: Jason Denue, vice president of energy, WENDEL Companies.
  • Team: Project Coordination Office, a program part of the Business Services, Finance and Administration team. Members of the Project Coordination Office include Andrea Roy, Janelle Toner, Malinda Keidel and Lillian Damin.
  • Climate Justice: Alexa Schindel, associate professor, science education, Graduate School of Education, whose research focuses on equity and justice in STEM education, climate change education and environmental justice education.

SLICE Award nominations are accepted on a rolling basis, beginning in early May. The nomination form is available on the Sustainability website.
