UB received a $475,000 federal grant to enhance its wind tunnel research on extreme weather events. The funding will allow UB to purchase advanced equipment for its Structural Engineering and Earthquake Simulation Laboratory, aiding in the study of how extreme winds impact infrastructure and contributing to the development of more resilient communities.

A six-week course by UB's Resilient Buildings Lab and PUSH Buffalo trains community members for careers in energy efficiency and clean technology. Funded by NYSERDA, the program offers hands-on skills like home energy auditing and HVAC assessment, aiming to provide disadvantaged communities with access to green job training and promote sustainability in Buffalo.

Daniel Jackson Smith, an assistant professor at UB’s School of Nursing, is attending the White House Extreme Heat Summit to discuss the impacts of extreme heat and mitigation strategies. Smith, whose research centers on climate change's health effects, advocates for setting maximum temperature limits in workplaces and schools to protect vulnerable populations.

Kelly K. Baker, director of UB's new Center for Climate Change and Health Equity, aims to foster collaboration across disciplines to address climate and health equity challenges. Her focus is on creating an incubator for researchers, policymakers, and communities to develop solutions that improve climate resiliency and health outcomes.
