An update on the GRoW Garden from Phoebe, Green Spaces Student Assistant
Last year, at the GRoW clean energy center, we built raised beds in hopes of creating a community where people can come together and garden. This summer, we have achieved this goal with 11 garden beds that are each tended by different groups! The garden beds are filled with a variety of vegetables including but not limited to cucumber, tomato, lettuce and pepper plants along with an assortment of flowers as well.
Now that it is mid-summer, these gardens are in full swing with overflowing beds of green alongside pops of color from ripe vegetables and blooming flowers. Along with the planting aspect of these gardens, we wanted this area to be a place where each group can customize their space and make it their own. In order to accomplish this, a sign making event was hosted earlier this summer to give the groups some creative freedom with their raised beds. Since this event, groups have also begun making their own personalizations with trellises and labels during their own time.
This garden is now a bright and fun haven that individuals can come to during their lunch breaks to socialize and relax while tending to their gardens. With this garden, we have achieved beyond our goal in creating an area for people to come together and have fun while being able to reap the benefits of their hard work.
