Retention at UB

UB is not simply a single university, but a collection of disparate entities, priorities and tactics. We’re already doing great work across campus. Attaining our ambitious goals will require building upon that foundation and coalescing efforts for a collective impact.

What We Know

  • 45% of students who left the university did not enroll at another institution (based on a five-year average from fall 2014-2018).
  • The 2019 6-Week Survey found that 53% of respondents who ultimately left UB had already considered leaving the institution six weeks into their first semester.
  • Students have indicated the following reasons for leaving the university: lack of academic success; disconnected from the UB community; desired major is non-accessible; insufficient financial resources; family or personal reasons.

At-Risk Populations

Ultimately, all students are at risk of attrition, though differences exist across various populations.

  • Retention rates for male students are lower than for female students.
  • Retention rates are lower for underrepresented minority students.
  • Retention rates are lower for domestic students than for international students.
  • Among domestic students, retention rates are lower for Hispanic students.
  • Pell-eligible students retain at a lower rate.
  • Students with lower GPAs retain at a lower rate.

Who is more likely to persist?

Students who have stronger connection to campus through:

  • Living Learning Communities
  • the Honors College
  • Living on campus
  • Library usage
  • Recreation center usage
