Prevention interviewed Nikhil Satchidanand, assistant professor of exercise physiology in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, about a study linking both walking pace and daily step count to longevity. Satchidanand said faster walking puts greater demands on the heart, lungs and muscles, which over time can improve cardiovascular fitness and metabolic health. “These are all factors closely associated with long-term health and survival,” he said.
