The Editorial Board: Broadway-Fillmore residents will take the reins on neighborhood transformation

The Buffalo News published an editorial praising the Upper Broadway-Fillmore Transformation Project that just received funding from the Mother Cabrini Foundation. “The pilot project to dramatically transform an East side neighborhood through improving housing, education and green spaces, was spearheaded by Henry-Louis Taylor, Jr. and Rev. George Nicholas. The editorial explains how two reports that Taylor and collaborators issued, first in 1990 and then in 2021, clearly illustrate how the quality of life for Black residents of Buffalo has stagnated for 30 years; it notes that even investments after the racist massacre of May 2022 haven’t made much difference. The editorial asks, “How long do we wait before we try something new? Thanks to this funding and the work of Taylor, the Rev. George F. Nicholas, CEO of the Buffalo Center for Health Equity and several other supportive organizations, the wait is over.”
