NBC News quotes Siwei Lyu in an article about how AI is increasing the distrust of online information. Lyu explained that people are likelier to immediately trust those they’re familiar with — such as celebrities, politicians, family members and friends — so AI likenesses of such figures will be even likelier to dupe people as they get more realistic. “In many cases, it may not be the media itself that has anything wrong, but it’s put up in the wrong context or by somebody we cannot totally trust,” Lyu said. “So I think, all in all, common awareness and common sense are the most important protection measures we have, and they do not need special training.”
