Connect NY, a show from WCNY (PBS affiliate in Syracuse), reports on efforts in New York to harness artificial intelligence for the betterment of society. The report features Venu Govindaraju, UB vice president for research and economic development. “Today, AI is all about learning from data. The more data you have the better it is. And you need computers that are really powerful,” said Govindaraju, who added that Empire AI is “moving at lightening speed.” The report also features Thomas Grant, assistant professor assistant professor of structural biology, who is employing Empire AI’s computing power to study proteins for drug discovery. “The research that we do is all about designing new and better medicines and to do it faster,” said Grant. “Any diseases that are caused by a protein of some kind, or RNA or DNA, which is most diseases – those can targeted.”
