An article in USA Today about criticism of the Cleveland Indians’ use of a Native American mascot reports a UB study last year found that Native American mascots were damaging to all ethnic groups and quotes Wendy Quinton, clinical associate professor of psychology. “Studies with mostly white samples have found that people exposed to American Indian mascots are more likely to negatively stereotype other ethnic groups as well,” she said. The article appeared in news outlets around the country, including MSN, Des Moines Register, Cincinnati Enquirer, Pacific Daily News, Indianapolis Star, Detroit Free Press and Arizona Republic.
