An article in USA Today about the history of scary clowns and why they give people the creeps quotes Andrew Stott, professor of English and the author of “The Pantomime Life of Joseph Grimaldi: Laughter, Madness and the Story of Britain’s Greatest Comedian,” who said the clown is more of an anachronism than ever. “It was once thriving and dynamic and fun, and now it’s curdled into this bitter, cynical and rather disturbing idea,” he said. The article appeared in USA Today-affiliated news outlets around the country, including WUSA-TV in Washington, D.C., KSDK-TV in St. Louis and WTSP-TV in Tampa.
