An article in The New York Times about Thursday’s announcement that music icon Prince died as a result of an accidental overdose of self-administered fentanyl quotes Torin Finver, clinical instructor of family medicine in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and an addiction medicine specialist, who said it can be easier to overdose on the drug because its effects last a shorter time than other opiates, leading users to dose more frequently and possibly to accidentally consume too much. The article also appeared in the Houston Chronicle, San Antonio Express-News and Albany Times-Union.

In addition, Richard Blondell, a professor of family medicine whose research also focuses on addictions, was quoted in the Los Angeles Times about fentanyl, a drug whose potential for addiction and abuse has led the Food and Drug Administration to enact strict guidelines over its prescription. “It’s very potent,” he said. “So the equivalent of a few grains of salt can be lethal in most people.”
