An article on Vice about the debt crisis in Puerto Rico, which last week defaulted on a $400 million debt payment, quotes Craig Centrie, a UB lecturer in Latino studies in the Department of Transnational Studies. “Puerto Rico has been a political pawn historically since its inception,” he said. “Most significantly during the Cold War, PR was used as a tool of propaganda between the U.S. and Soviet Union to demonstrate the overall superiority of capitalism over communism.”
