North, South Korea reach deal to end tense standoff

Michelle Benson, associate professor of political science, was interviewed for an article in USA Today about an agreement announced early Tuesday to end a standoff between North Korea and South Korea that threatened to escalate into a full-scale military confrontation. “It is very, very difficult to know how credible any agreement with North Korea would be given Kim Jong Un’s past history of extreme threats,” she said. “There will probably be some short-term gains, but it is hard to say long term given his history.”
