Chimps’ rights set to evolve

An article in the Toronto Star about a legal hearing that will be held to determine whether two chimpanzees can be granted legal protection against unlawful imprisonment, just like human beings, quotes John Shook, research associate professor of philosophy. “If you really want top-level, ethical protection…we should engage in the protective area of the law, where we guard against negligence, we guard against inferior treatment, we guard against degrading the dignity of the species,” he said.
