Raja, a food systems expert, argues that local governments need to pay more attention to providing residents with healthy food. Cities and counties have departments for water, education, transportation, parks and social services, but not for food, she writes. This neglect contributes to problems such as a lack of fresh food in low-income neighborhoods and high rates of diet-related disease, she says.
