Founded in 1967 by a computing pioneer, the Computer Science and Engineering Department was one of the first in the nation.

As part of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, we aim to provide students with strong conceptual foundations (theoretical and experimental), and also expose them to the forefront of the developments in the field of computing. Recognizing the applicability of computing to all fields of knowledge and practice, we also provide interdisciplinary degree programs, and offer computer education and training to all students at UB.

Here, our faculty perform world-class research in today’s most relevant topics, such as artificial intelligence and robotics, cyber security, big data analytics, bioinformatics and computer-assisted education, to name just a few. UB’s Center for Computational Research (CCR) is considered one of the nation's leading supercomputing centers and supports high performance computing for departmental research in a variety of areas.

In addition to our academic and research initiatives, we assist other UB departments in developing faculty computing expertise, and provide industrial outreach.

    William J. Rae, who was a SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor Emeritus in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, died on July 15 at the age of 90.
