Widespread COVID-19 vaccinations can save lives and help our community begin to thrive once again. As the vaccine rolls out, we want to encourage vaccination by sharing stories from Western New Yorkers like Pamela Harold from Patient Voices Network. She recently received her COVID-19 vaccine and shares her thoughts about the experience.

Why did you decide to get the COVID-19 vaccine?

I got the vaccine because of my health. I currently live with several health conditions that put me at high risk. For me, getting the shot was a matter of assessing the risks and the benefits — I realized that it would be much worse for me to get COVID-19.

Where did you receive your vaccine?

I was able to receive my vaccine at my dialysis center. I got the shot in my right arm. It was a little sore the next day but that was the only side effect I experienced.

What would you say to others thinking about getting the vaccine?

If you or your loved ones have serious health issues, but are unsure about whether to get the vaccine, you should talk with your doctor. Also, even though the vaccine is here, make sure to continue to wear your masks!

What is the first thing you want to do once you are fully vaccinated?

Visit my family! I have missed seeing and hugging them.

To see if you are eligible or to find a vaccination location, visit the New York State vaccine website.

Need help signing up for your vaccine? WNY Vaccine Hound serves as a one-stop website that lists vaccination appointment openings in Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Niagara and Erie counties. It was developed by UB and is run by a group of volunteers who search for potential vaccine appointments by checking local government, healthcare, and pharmacy websites right here in Western New York.

Several Buffalo & Erie County Public Library branches are offering in-person assistance to book COVID-19 vaccine appointments. Please note that libraries are not vaccination sites. Find list of locations and more information here.
