Ask any parent or guardian about ongoing challenges and they are sure to mention getting children to make healthy eating choices. Sugary foods and drinks are everywhere, and oftentimes are more easily available (and cost less) than fruits and vegetables.

University at Buffalo Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) Recruitment and Special Populations Core Director Teresa Quattrin, MD, UB Distinguished Professor, Department of Pediatrics, Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, recently spoke with Spectrum News 1 about ways to encourage kids to eat healthy. She outlined several methods, including:

  • Modeling good behaviors
  • Ensuring healthy foods, like fruits and vegetables, are available
  • Considering a child’s eating preferences
  • Watching portions when it comes to sugary foods
  • Offering water instead of juice
  • Buying seltzer or mineral water as another option
  • Slicing up and freezing fruit, and adding it to water
  • Preplanning dinners (and using leftovers) whenever possible
