Sharma awarded NIH K08 award to study myocardial fibrosis and heart failure

On July 15, Umesh Sharma, MD, PhD, a CTSI Scholar in the Mentored Career Development Program, was granted a five-year, $986,850 KO8 award.

The award was for his proposal: "Galectin-3-Mediated Post-Ischemic Myocardial Dysfunction and Its Inhibition by a Novel Peptide N-Acetyl-Seryl-Aspartyl-Lysyl-Proline."

Sharma, assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, is an aspiring physician-scientist working on the mechanism of galectin-3-induced cardiac fibrosis in the development of lethal cardiac arrhythmias with research mentor John Canty, Jr., MD, SUNY Distinguished Professor of Medicine, chief of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine and deputy director of UB's Clinical and Translational Science Institute.
