Policy on student directory information updated

To the Editor:

UB is updating its policy regarding information release and directory information, effective with the Fall 2000 semester. The most significant changes in the policy are:

- The definition of directory information now will include email address.

- We will assume that all students permit the release of their directory information unless they specifically complete a "Request for Non-Release of Directory Information" form. The form can be printed from the Web site http://wings.buf-falo.edu/services/rec-reg/ferpaform.html and delivered or mailed to the Records and Registration offices in 232 Capen or Hayes Annex B. It also may be faxed to 829-2215.

The consequences of a decision to not authorize release of directory information are as follows:

- Requests for contact information from UB persons on non-essential matters and from non-UB persons will be denied.

- Requests for verification of major, dates of attendance and degrees and awards received will be denied, even when asked by prospective employers, scholarship organizations and the like.

- Name, major field of study and email address no longer will be available in the campus Internet-accessible directory.

If students still choose to not authorize release of directory information-despite these consequences-they need to complete the "Request for Non-Release of Directory Information" form.

Students need do nothing more if they permit release of their directory information.

Records and Registration staff gladly will respond to any questions via email at registrar@sfr.buf-falo.edu or at 829-2382. Students also may stop in to see us in 232 Capen or Hayes Annex B if they have any questions.

Thank you for your assistance in sharing this information with your readers.

Sincerely,

Joanne M. Plunkett
University Registrar
