The Department of Music will present a diverse selection of concerts next month featuring the virtuoso sounds of flutes, percussion and violin.

Violinist Movses Pogossian will perform the third concert in the Slee Visiting Artist Series-an all-Bach solo recital-at 8 p.m. Nov. 3 in Slee Concert Hall.
Robert Dick

Pogossian was the youngest-ever first-prize winner in the seventh all-U.S.S.R. National Violin Competition in 1985. He made his critically acclaimed American debut with the Boston Pops in 1990. Since being invited to perform in the Slee Visiting Artist Series this year, he has joined the UB music faculty as a visiting artist teacher.

"Pantasmagoria," a day of presentations devoted to the flute and flutists in the 21st century, will begin at 11 a.m. Nov. 19 in Baird Recital Hall on the North Campus.

The presentations, which will run until 7 p.m., will include a master class and recital conducted by Robert Dick, an improvisor, composer, author, teacher and inventor known worldwide for redefining the flute.

His recital, set for 5 p.m., will feature work composed by Dick, including the world premiere of "Paint Your Mammouth," a piece for five improvising flutists: Dick, Joanna Bassett, Michael Colquhoun, Anne Thompson and Cheryl Gobbetti-Hoffman.

"Pantasmagoria" also will feature a performance by Plosion, UB's flute ensemble directed by Gobbetti-Hoffman.

The exquisite sounds of the violin, cello and piano will be heard in tandem in Slee Nov. 29 as the Baird Trio presents a program including Mendelssohn's Trio No. 2 in C minor, Op. 66.

The Baird Trio features Pogossian playing violin, Jonathon Golove on the cello and Stephen Manes playing the piano.

Visiting assistant professor of music, Golove received a doctorate in musical composition from UB as a Woodburn Fellow. As well as being an accomplished cellist, he has written for and founded a variety of ensembles, and was the first winner of the ASCAP Foundation's Leo Kaplan Award.

Manes, professor and chair of the Department of Music, is distinguished equally for his formidable technique and interpretive refinement. He has performed in most major U.S. cities and in such European centers as London, Berlin, Amsterdam and Vienna.

Pogossian was the first Soviet musician who received a fellowship to the world-renowned Tanglewood Music Festival in Massachusetts, where he also received the Boston Symphony Orchestra's Pierre Mayer Award for outstanding musicianship.

The Cassatt String Quartet will present the third concert in the 45th annual presentation of the Slee/Beethoven String Quartet Cycle at 8 p.m. Nov. 10 in Slee.

The performance will feature quartets representing the early, middle and late periods of Beethoven's life.

The Department of Music's other ensemble-in-residence, the Amherst Saxophone Quartet, will present "Dance!" at 8 p.m. Nov. 16 in Slee.

Joining the quartet will be special guest ensemble Buffalo Contemporary Dance to bring great works by Terry Riley, Astor Piazzolla and Eubie Blake to life, both musically and visually.

Single tickets for most concerts sponsored by the Department of Music range from $5 to $12. For the more expensive concerts, discounts are available for seniors, students and UB faculty/staff/alumni. Tickets may be obtained from the Slee Hall box office Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., from the Center for the Arts box office Tuesday through Friday from noon to 5 p.m. or at TicketMaster outlets.
