“Tumescence: Rumsey Competition Exhibition,” the annual exhibition showcasing the work of junior-level students from the Department of Visual Studies as they compete for the yearly Rumsey Scholarship, will open with a public reception from 5-7 p.m. Nov. 21 in the Visual Studies Gallery on the second floor of the UB Art Gallery in the Center for the Arts, North Campus.

Headlining the exhibit, which will be on view in the gallery through Dec. 6, will be last year’s Rumsey winner Alissa Bailey. Other participants, who are competing for the 2014 Rumsey Scholarship, are Neaha Aamir, Hannah Belotte, Alicia Grunder, Austin Laughlin, Harumo Sato and Amber Sliter. They will be attending the reception.

The Rumsey Scholarship funds travel and study during the summer between the recipient’s junior and senior year. The recipient is selected by the entire Visual Studies faculty based on the quality of the exhibited work and a written proposal describing how the award will be used. The award recipient(s) will produce work for an exhibition in fall 2014.

The Buffalo-born Evelyn Rumsey, the scholarship’s namesake, was a student of Robert Henri and Charles Hawthorne; one of her works was exhibited in the New York Armory Show of 1913. According to one critic, “Her most significant work, the early impressionist paintings, establishes her as one of a select group of early 20th-century American impressionist painters.”

Rumsey’s brother, Charles Cary Rumsey, was a well-known sculptor; some of his work has been restored by the UB Casting Institute.

The Visual Studies Gallery is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 1-5 p.m. on Saturday. All exhibitions are free and open to the public.
