UB dance faculty member Melanie Aceto will perform to works by two composers—both of whom also have UB connections—as A Musical Feast opens its 2013-14 season Oct. 11 at the Burchfield Penney Art Center at Buffalo State College.

The concert, which also will include a performance by UB music department faculty member Jonathan Golove, will take place at 8 p.m. in the Peter & Elizabeth C. Tower Auditorium at the Burchfield Penney. It is co-sponsored by the Robert and Carol Morris Center for 20th Century Music.

Aceto will perform in “Liaison,” a work by UB music composition student Megan Beugger, and in the premiere of “Defence,” a work by Israeli composer and UB music alumnus Moshe Shulman.

“Liaison” was performed this summer at the June in Buffalo festival of new music and was considered by many to be the most original work at the festival.

Golove, associate professor and associate chair of the Department of Music, will perform on the theremin cello, one of the first electronic musical instruments and the first to be mass-produced. Golove tested and developed the instrument’s playing mechanisms—as well as techniques for playing it since there were no established methods—and created a repertoire for the instrument.

The Musical Feast program also will feature pianolist Robert Berkman, music director of QRS Music Rolls, interpreting rare piano rolls by Ravel, Stavinsky and others. His performance will expand on his recent, well-received recital at the National Gallery in Washington, D.C.

A Musical Feast, ensemble-in-residence at the Burchfield Penney, was founded and is directed by Charles Haupt, retired BPO concert master and concert master of Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra for 21 years.
