With Pope Francis now tweeting in Latin, Latin lovers can attend Conventiculum Buffaloniense (con-ven-TIK-you-lum Buffalo–nee-ence), UB’s fifth annual three-day immersion workshop in spoken Latin.

It will take place June 26-28 at Byblos Restaurant, 270 Campbell Blvd., Getzville, and in the Honors Colloquium Room, 107 Capen Hall, North Campus.

The theme of year’s workshop is friendship, or amicitia (ah-me-KEE-tee-ah). The touchstone for discussions of friendship will be Cicero’s “De Amicitia,” selections from which will be read in the workshop.

Participants will practice speaking on a set of topics, then apply these skills through creative and engaging activities. The workshop is geared toward those with the equivalent of two years or more of college Latin. While participants need not have any previous experience speaking Latin, the workshop is also suitable for those with some speaking experience who want to improve their skills.

Serving as moderators will be Neil Coffee, chair and associate professor, UB Department of Classics; Catherine Nicastro of East Aurora High School; and Kevin Roth, a PhD candidate in classics. All have years of experience speaking Latin and leading spoken-Latin groups here and in other states.
