The Department of Theatre & Dance will present “Blood Wedding” Oct. 23-27 in the Black Box Theatre in the Center for the Arts, North Campus.

Performance times are 7:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.

“Blood Wedding” is considered to be Federico Garcia Lorca’s greatest play, first produced in 1933. The plot of the play is deceptively simple, based on an actual incident reported at the time in a Granada newspaper: A bride elopes with her former lover and the lover is subsequently killed by the groom’s brother.

The cast includes majors from across the Department of Theatre & Dance. Vincent O’Neill, associate professor of theatre and dance and artistic director of Buffalo’s Irish Classical Theatre Company, will direct the production.

O’Neill’s connection to Lorca goes back to his teenage years. Having read Lorca’s poetry in translation, it became clear to O’Neill that he was missing out on a whole world of imagery and metaphor and textual richness. He joined the Spanish Society at University College Dublin, and he spent three years performing Spanish plays in their original language. Having been cast in the role of Leonardo in “Blood Wedding,” O’Neill has had a special affection for the play ever since.
