The School of Architecture and Planning will host a screening of “Archiculture,” an award-winning documentary and critique on the architectural studio, at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 2 in 148 Diefendorf, South Campus.

The film, set for release in spring 2014, offers a unique glimpse into the world of studio-based, design education through the eyes of five architecture students. 

Director Ian Harris and one of the starring students, Giancarlo Tramontozzi, will attend the screening and moderate a discussion after the film. The event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by UB’s Architecture Graduate Student Association.   

The film follows a group of young design students through their final semester at Pratt Institute in New York City for a first-hand look at studio culture and its model of peer-to-peer learning. Often defined by cut-throat competition and all-nighters, the shared studio environment also offers a unique educational, cultural and social experience. Weaving back and forth between the studio and professional setting, the film features interviews with leading professionals, historians and educators on the architectural studio, as well as the future of design education.

Buffalo is among dozens of screening locations across the U.S. The film’s producers are employing a DIY distribution model in which schools, firms, organizations and design centers screen the movie as a way to provoke broad dialogue on the state of architectural and design education. Members of the university and local communities, architecture and design professionals, and current and future students of the discipline are encouraged to attend.
