Phase II: South Campus
Exploring Options for Physical Growth
University at Buffalo is currently developing options for how UB 2020’s expanded academic program might be distributed on the three campuses. Below are illustrations of growth on the South Campus for just three of these options.
Growth in Place

- Pharmacy moves to South Campus
- Currently 3,000,000 of building gross square footage on South Campus
- Up to 1,900,000 gross square feet of new construction and 150,000 gross square feet of adaptive reuse might be required
Main Street Parking & Program
Sustainably designed parking garages may be a solution for increased parking demand. A new structure on Main Street could include retail or public uses at the street level.
South Precinct for Housing
A new residential precinct at the south end of the campus is an option to meet increasing housing demand. Proposed scale and materials should address the site’s residential context.
Redistributed Growth (Option 1)

- Schools of Medicine, Nursing and Public Health move Downtown
- Schools of Education, Law, Pharmacy, Social Work, and Management (graduate only) move to the South Campus
- Currently 3,000,000 of building gross square footage on South Campus
- Up to 1,100,000 gross square feet of new construction and 850,000 gross square feet of adaptive reuse might be required
Recreation & Wellness
Clark Hall might be an appropriate site for an enhanced athletics and recreation building. The adjacent athletic fields create an active landscape in juxtaposition to the smaller scale of the historic quadrangles.
Bailey Avenue Ceremonial Entry
A significant new landscaped entry loop, on axis with Abbott Hall, could provide vehicular access to the historic Academic Core from
Bailey Avenue.
Redistributed Growth (Option 2)

- Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Public Health, and Dental Medicine move Downtown
- Schools of Education, Law, Social Work, and Management (graduate only) move to the South Campus
- Currently 3,000,000 of building gross square footage on South Campus
- Up to 700,000 gross square feet of new construction and 1,100,000 gross square feet of adaptive reuse might be required
Main Street Housing
New housing might be located near the current complex of Goodyear and Clement. The buildings could be designed in response to the enhanced greensward along Main Street and the escarpment as a natural feature.
Bailey Avenue Development
If Farber Hall and Sherman Hall are demolished, a new face to the South Campus could be developed. Complementary uses would benefit from the easy access to both Bailey Avenue and the Academic Core.
