Guiding Principles

As the campus considers strategies and actions to manage through current and future funding challenges it is imperative that the long term vision for UB as a top tier research university be maintained and that reductions and investments be aligned to institutional strategic priorities (UB2020). Accordingly, the following principles shall be used to guide the campus in its decision making process:

  • Impact to quality of student education must be minimal
  • Avoid across the board cuts - make selected cuts
  • Create efficiencies through organizational restructuring (both academic and academic support) and investments in technology
    • Identify and eliminate redundancies and waste
    • Optimize utilization of staff and faculty
    • Use incentives and measures to drive organizational and cultural change
  • Seek opportunities to create new revenues
    • Eliminate structural, institutional and policy barriers
  • Subsidized operations must have a clear cost / benefit analysis and be fully understood
