Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences

A major anchor of UB’s downtown presence, the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences will move to the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus in 2017.

One of the signature gestures of the Comprehesive Plan is the realization of the Downtown Campus as a new home for the Health Sciences schools. The next step in this process is the relocation of the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (SMBS) to the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus (BNMC).

The goal is to bring together the three components of medical education, bio-medical research and patient care into one physical location in Western New York, the creation of a true Academic Medical Campus. This integrated program will place emphasis on patient outcomes, foster advancements in medical education and will provide the setting for new breakthroughs in medical research. The Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences is poised to grow in student enrollment, faculty and staff. With a new home to facilitate its ambitious plans for the future, the School will continue to be a flagship institution for the University at Buffalo.

The project is planned to be approximately 628,000 GSF and will hold the Dean’s administrative functions, biomedical education, basic science departmental space and most of their research and faculty. The new SMBS is being designed with the following priorities in mind:

• Create a “front door” to UB, SMBS and the entire BNMC
• Emphasis on student learning environment both formal and informal
• Emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration among departments
• Create an environment which supports high level funded research

UB is dedicated to design excellence of the built environment and is committed to ensuring that the building meets sustainability goals and positively contribute to the campus experience. The new Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences will be a signature building for the Downtown Campus and the entire University. The SEQR Process

The Findings Statement (link to the document below) was prepared by the State University Construction Fund (SUCF), acting as Lead Agency relating to the review of the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences project, pursuant to the New York State Environmental Quality Review Act. This Findings Statement represents the conclusion of the environmental review for the proposed project. It draws upon matters set forth in the SEQR record, including the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS), Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) and public comments recieved during the public comment period.

The EIS (consisting of the DEIS and FEIS) for the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences Project is complete. Involved and interested agencies, faculty, staff and students, as well as the public were invited to participate in the SEQR process through a public scoping meeting held Oct. 22, 2012 to solicit comments on the draft scope of work for the DEIS. The final scoping document was then finished on Dec. 20 2012 and subsequently used to generate the DEIS below.

Once the DEIS was completed, a 30 day public comment period was held. This closed on July 8th 2013. The University at Buffalo then held a public hearing on June 25th 2013 in the UB Gateway Building located at 77 Goodell Street in downtown Buffalo. Comments received during this period and from the meeting were used in the creation of the FEIS.   • The Central Library of the Buffalo & Erie County Public Libraries at 1 Lafayette Square in Downtown Buffalo
  • The Health Sciences Library in Abbott Hall on the South (Main Street) Campus
