Value Stream Mapping (VSM8)

If an atypical noise emanates from your car, the most talented mechanic is unlikely to diagnose what needs fixing by looking at it from the outside. The story is similar for a broken work process. Understanding the non-functioning elements requires deconstructing the process, piece by piece. The best way to see the details? Value stream mapping (VSM).

This course introduces VSM and its place within the overall problem-solving methodology of Lean: a diagnostic tool for identifying and quantifying waste in a process, and the first step in the journey to determining the root cause of a problem.

Topics include:

  • Kaizen
  • Scope definition
  • Team selection and engagement
  • Project planning
  • VSM techniques
  • Process metrics
  • Root cause analysis

The course incorporates tips, tools, interactive discussion and hands-on activity.

Hours: 8

  • Use the current state map to start root cause analysis
  • Create a future state map that solves the root cause of the problem
