UB sweeps doubleheader against Mt. St. Mary's

UB scored a doubleheader sweep over Mt. St. Mary's on Saturday. The Bulls rallied for an 11-10 victory in the first game and followed with a 9-3 win over the Mountaineers in the nightcap. The sweep evened the Bulls' record to 4-4 and extended their winning streak to three games.

In the first game, the Bulls jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Bryan Sanchez doubled to bring home leadoff man Phil Vanhorne with the first run of the contest. Sanchez later scored on an RBI-single by Brandon DiCesare. The Bulls broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the second on runs by John Boom and co-captain Adrian Daniels.

The Mountaineers countered in the third inning as Walter Talarek hit a grand slam to give Mt. St. Mary's a 6-4 edge.
 
Athletes of the Week
  Adrian Daniels of the baseball team went 7-for-8 in a doubleheader sweep at Mt. St. Mary's on Saturday. Daniels also added five runs scored and five RBIs as the Bulls swept the Mountaineers, 11-10 and 9-3. With his performance, Daniels raised his batting average 160 points to .433. He hit his first home run of the season in the nightcap.

Kimberly LaHaye of the women's swimming and diving team competed in the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships in Annapolis, Md. She finished 10th (239.50) in the one-meter competition. She also placed 15th (405.90) in the three-meter event and 10th (318.85) in the platform competition.

UB took the lead for good in the sixth inning, scoring four runs on a pair of hits combined with two Mt. St. Mary's errors. Trailing 7-6, Daniels singled and scored the tying run on a passed ball. DiCesare broke the tie with a bases-clearing double, plating three runs and giving the UB co-captain four RBIs for the game.

John Sullivan picked up the win on the mound for his second victory of the season. Mark Garrard earned his first collegiate save with 1.2 innings of relief, striking out three.

In the nightcap, Brendan Dunford (1-2) picked up the complete-game victory, allowing five hits and striking out 10. Dunford got support offensively, as Daniels hit a two-run homer and Tim Sova added an RBI-double in the fifth to give the Bulls a 5-3 lead. The Bulls added four more runs in the seventh with RBIs by Sanchez, DiCesare, Daniels and Vanhorne.

Daniels completed the day 7-for-8 at the plate, with five runs scored and five RBIs to lead the UB offensive attack. Vanhorne went 4-for-9 with three runs scored and three stolen bases from his leadoff position.

Women's

LaHaye competes at NCAA Zone Championships

Freshman diver Kimberly LaHaye turned in some strong performances over the weekend at the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships held in Lejeune Hall on the campus of the United States Naval Academy. The meet, which divers qualify for during the regular season, serves as a preliminary round to the overall NCAA Championships, which are scheduled for this weekend. The top two finishers in each event of the Zone A championships qualified for the NCAA Championships.

LaHaye placed 10th among 40 entrants in the one-meter competition scoring a total of 239.35 points. She also took 15th in the 35-diver three-meter event, totaling 405.90 points. In the platform diving competition, she finished 10th of 14 with 318.85 points.

Redshirted last season, LaHaye made a big impact on UB's diving program in the 2001-02 season, helping the Bulls to a fifth-place finish at last month's Mid-American Conference Championships. LaHaye finished third on the three-meter board and fifth on the one-meter board during the league meet.

UB completed a three-match weekend with a 6-1 victory over Niagara University at the Village Glen Tennis Club on Sunday.

The Bulls took five singles victories. At first singles, senior Fery Kasiman led Jonathan Bozanich 4-2 in the first set before Bozanich retired. At second singles, Randy Rocchio defeated Eric Roslansky, 6-3, 6-3.

Justin Brtko took the third-singles victory over Mike Kelly, 6-3, 6-0. Freshman Nick Zieziula defeated Kris Hrisovulos at fourth singles, 6-0, 6-0. Josh Liederman fell to Jason Pope at fifth singles, 6-3, 6-2. At sixth singles, Sean Kelley defeated Tom Rees, 6-1, 6-0.

In doubles competition, Brtko and Kasiman fell to Bozanich and Kelly at first doubles, 8-6. At second doubles, Rocchio and Zieziula defeated Hrisovulos and Pope, 8-2. Liederman and Rohan Raikar defeated Tom Rees and Eric Roslansky, 8-3.

UB opened the weekend with a pair of losses—7-0 to MAC rival Western Michigan, and 6-1 to St. Bonaventure in Olean.

Against St. Bonaventure, Kasiman took the first-singles match with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) win over Vili Nurmi.

The Bulls head to Florida for spring break. They will face Rollins in Orlando on Monday.
