UB drops pair to Bonnies; takes 1 of 4 against Zips
UB dropped a doubleheader to St. Bonaventure, 5-0 and 7-2, in non-league baseball action in a windy Dunn Tire Park to open the week.
The Bulls were shut out in game one by St. Bonaventure pitchers Matt Sullivan and John Brewer. Sullivan pitched five innings, allowed four hits and struck out seven, while Brewer went the final two innings, allowing one hit, to give the Bonnies the game. The Bulls were unable to get a runner past second base in the seven-inning contest.
In game two, shortstop Mark Evers had two homers and an RBI triple, while Mike Rapicioli added a home run and two RBIs in the 7-2 decision. Brewer started game two, allowing just one hit in two innings before yielding to Matt Gunesch, who went the final five innings.
The Bulls notched single runs in the fifth and sixth innings after the Bonnies had built a 7-0 lead.
UB then traveled to Akron for a four-game Mid-American Conference series with the Zips. The Bulls dumped their hosts, 15-1, in Friday's opener as Brendan Dunford tossed a complete game, striking out nine, allowing just a first inning run.
The Bulls dropped a doubleheader Saturday, 21-3 and 16-5. Bryan Sanchez hit a three-run homer in the nightcap for the Bulls.
UB closed the weekend with a heartbreaking loss, 9-8, in 10 innings. The Bulls broke a 6-6 tie in the top of the ninth as Kevin Nesteruk and Tim Sova were hit by pitches with the bases loaded. Akron then rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings. In the bottom of the 10th, Sean Manfredonia plated Ty Moorhead with the winning run for the Zips.
The Bulls fell to 10-34 overall and 5-19 in league play.

Brendan Dunford of the baseball team threw a complete game and struck out nine in UB's 15-1 win over Akron on Sunday. It was Dunford's third win in a row and his third complete game in his last four outings. Dunford allowed only a first-inning run and scattered eight hits, dropping his earned run average by more than a full point.
Biaunca McFarland of the women's track and field team won the Eastern Triple Jump championship at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia. McFarland took the event with a leap of 40-2 (12.24m) to claim the title.

Softball
UB splits doubleheader with Bonnies; drop series with Herd
UB split a doubleheader with local rival St. Bonaventure in Olean. The Bulls lost a 2-1 decision in the opener before scoring three runs in the fifth inning for a come-from-behind 4-3 victory in the nightcap. Freshman pitcher Heather Robbins earned the win on the mound and also drove in two runs, while freshman Allison Round and senior Kim Lawrence were both 3-for-4 from the plate to lead the Bulls' offensive attack in the win.
UB (9-38, 3-18 MAC) lost all three games of a MAC weekend series at Marshall University. The Bulls dropped both ends of a doubleheader Friday, 2-0 and 4-1, before losing a single game Saturday by an 8-0 score to the Thundering Herd.

Athletes compete in Penn Relays
Several athletes represented UB at the prestigious Penn Relays in Philadelphia over the weekend. Teams from the top college and high school programs throughout the country, as well as many of the United States' top amateur athletes, were in competition in the five-day meet. Many of the events were divided into several subcategories, including overall championships, Eastern championships and Championship of America.
Sophomore Biaunca McFarland was the top performer for the Bulls at the meet, winning the Eastern Triple Jump competition with a leap of 40-2 (12.24m).
Katie Scott finished fourth of nine in 1:02.59 in her heat of the 400 hurdles competition. Multi-event athlete Meagan Rogers competed in the heptathlon, placing 10th of 12 entrants after the first day of competition. Rogers, however, was unable to complete the grueling seven-event competition the following day due to an injury and was forced to withdraw after completing six of the seven events.
The women's 4x400 relay squad finished third in its heat in 3:51.34, while the 4x100 squad placed fifth in its heat in 48.28. The Bulls also placed 14th among 31 teams in the 4x800 relay in a time of 9:05.30.
The UB men had some strong performances in the field events. Keith Gentes placed fifth in the hammer with a toss of 182-7 (55.62m). In the triple jump, Kamau Halim was eighth at 48-4.5 (14.74m), while Mark Curry placed seventh in the Eastern Triple Jump at 46-10.25 (14.28m).
UB's men's 4x400 relay squad placed second in their heat in 3:19.32.
Tennis
Men's
Bowling Green 4, UB 0
UB dropped its MAC tournament first-round matchup against Bowling Green, 4-0, in Kalamazoo, Mich., on April 26. The loss ends the Bulls' season, which they finished with a 14-7 overall record and an 0-6 MAC record.
In the MAC tournament, play halts as soon as one team wins two doubles matches and earns enough singles victories to clinch the match.
Host Western Michigan defeated Ball State to claim the conference title.
Women's
Toledo 4, UB 0
The ninth-seeded Bulls dropped their first-round MAC tournament matchup to the eighth-seeded Toledo Rockets, 4-0, in Huntington, W. Va. on April 26. With the loss, UB finishes its season 3-16 overall and 1-8 in conference matches.
Eastern Michigan defeated host Marshall in the final round to gain the MAC title.
Football
2 players sign with NFL
Offensive tackle David Pruce and defensive back Noah Burroughs are headed to the National Football League after signing free-agent contracts April 23.
Pruce, a 6-8, 295-pound offensive tackle, was signed by the Super Bowl Champion Baltimore Ravens.
Burroughs was signed by the New York Jets.
