Myron Roberts, professor emeritus of orthodontics
Myron A. Roberts, a Buffalo orthodontist for 45 years and clinical professor emeritus of orthodontics in the School of Dental Medicine, died March 25 in Sisters Hospital after a brief illness. He was 96.
Roberts was a former president of the UB Alumni Association, which his son, Donald, headed in 1999-2000. The pair is considered to be the first father and son to serve as president. He also was a past president of the UB Dental Alumni Association, which dedicated its 69th annual meeting to him in 1971.
A Buffalo native, Roberts was president of his dental school class in 1930. Having completed post-graduate study in orthodontics at Columbia University in 1933, he began teaching in 1938 at the UB dental school, where he taught for nearly 40 years. He was certified by the American Board of Orthodontics in 1940.
Roberts was in private practice for 45 years at 471 Linwood Ave. at West Ferry Street, practicing initially with his father, the late Jay G. Roberts.
He was a past president of the Erie County Dental Association and the Eighth District Dental Society. When he became president of the Dental Society of New York State in 1959, he was the first dentist to follow his father into the state presidency.
Roberts served as international president of Delta Sigma Delta dental fraternity in 1954. He also was national treasurer of the fraternity for 12 years and the third dentist in 90 years to be made an honorary member of the group.
He was a former national president of the American Dental Interfraternity Council and served for more than 20 years as a delegate to the American Dental Association.
In addition, Roberts was a member of Omicron Kappa Upsilon national honorary dental fraternity for more than 60 years and was a former president of its Buffalo chapter.
He held the Distinguished Service Award of the American College of Dentists, Distinguished Alumni Award of Theta Chi fraternity, the Bison Head of UB's Senior Honor Society and a UB varsity letter for helping to manage basketball teams at the university.
