The UB Bulls won both games at the William Morgan Classic on Nov. 11 at Lockport High School against Niagara (16-15, 15-8, 15-4) and Canisius (17-15, 15-9, 17-15), and then dropped both Mid-American Conference matches this weekend, losing at Ohio (4-15, 13-15, 15-17) and at Marshall (8-15, 13-15, 15-17).

Senior outside hitter Chassey Stubler led Buffalo against Niagara with 11 kills and 10 digs and against Canisius with 18 kills and 23 digs. Aprille Sweeting added six service aces against Niagara and 12 kills and 14 digs against Canisius.

Freshman outside hitter Keri Shiels had 13 kills and 10 digs against Marshall and four kills and nine digs against Ohio. Stubler had six kills and eight digs in the match.

Basketball

Women's
UB 86, Canisius 75
UB Head Coach Cheryl Dozier started her Bulls' coaching career with an impressive 86-75 victory over the Canisius Golden Griffins in Alumni Arena.

The Bulls showed some season-opening jitters, shooting just .296 (8-of-27) from the field in the first half, including just 1-of-8 from three-point range. Free-throw shooting kept UB in the game during that first half, hitting on 15-of-19 (.789) from the charity stripe.

The Bulls used a 12-1 run to pull out to a 19-point lead, 46-27, five minutes into the second half. The team's largest lead came at the 11:44 mark, when Mari McClure hit a jumper to put UB ahead 56-35. Canisius could get no closer than the final 11-point margin the rest of the game as the Bulls won their season opener, 86-75.

There were a total of 63 fouls, 32 against UB and 31 against Canisius. The Bulls took advantage, hitting 29-of-41 (.707) from the line as a team. The Bulls shot much better as a team in the second half, hitting .528 from the field and finishing with a .429 (27-of-63) for the game.

McClure led UB with 21 points, including 11-of-13 shooting from the free-throw line. Three other Bulls hit double figures in scoring. Kim Coon added 17 points, Catherine Jacob scored 15 and Sam Cerny added 11 points off the bench.

The Bulls controlled the glass as well, out-rebounding Canisius 45-31. Courtney Joseph led the way with a game- and career-high 14 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end.

Men's
Niagara 85, UB 63
The UB men's basketball team fought hard and stayed even with the Purple Eagles in the first half, but fell behind early in the second to lose its season opener, 85-63.

The Bulls never trailed Niagara University by more than five points in the first half, which saw five lead changes and four ties before the two teams went into the locker room, tied 34-34, at halftime.

In the second half, Niagara came out strong, using a 23-2 run to open the half to take a 21-point lead, 57-36, and take control of the game. The Purple Eagles led by as many as 25 points, 71-46, with six minutes remaining en route to the 85-63 win over the Bulls.

UB was led by freshman Bogdan Karebin, who chipped in 12 points off the bench, the only double-figure scorer for the Bulls. Sophomore Will Campbell led the team on the boards with seven rebounds and added eight points. Sophomore Maliso Libomi also matched his career high with eight points.

Swimming

Women's
Eastern Michigan 176, UB 121 Ball State 186, UB 114

The UB women's swimming team was edged out by MAC opponents Eastern Michigan (176-121) and Ball State (186-114) in a double-dual meet in Ypsilanti, Mich., on Saturday.

The Bulls' lone first -place finish came from junior Kim Theetge, who finished the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:08.08.
