Symposium to look at complexities of visual communication
A symposium on the cultural complexities of visual communication, "Vital Means: Visual Studies," will be held from 1-5 p.m. Saturday in the Center for the Arts Screening Room. The symposium will be free and open to the public. A reception will follow in the First Floor Gallery.

Keynote speaker will be Al Harris F., director of the UB Art Gallery. Presenters will be Douglas Crimp, professor of art history, visual and cultural studies, University of Rochester; Heather Hendershot, assistant professor, Department of Media Studies, Queens College, and Renee Green, New York City artist/writer.

Sponsored by the UB Art Gallery, the symposium will be supported in part by Conferences in the Disciplines at UB, with additional support from the departments of Art History, English and Media Study. For more information, call 645-6912.

Symposium concludes "About Women" Film Festival
A Symposium, "Women and Gender in International Cinema," to be held at 2 p.m. Dec. 4 in the Screening Room, Center for the Arts, will close the Third International Film Festival, "About Women." A reception will follow.

Symposium panelists will be: Hank Bromley, assistant professor, Department of Educational Organization, Administration and Policy; Joan Copjec, professor, Department of English; Alexis DeVeaux, assistant professor, Department of American Studies; Sarah Elder, professor, Department of Media Study; Mary Flanagan, assistant professor, Department of Media Study; Charlene Gilbert, assistant professor, Department of Media Study; Shaun Irlam, assistant professor, Department of Comparative Literature; Meg Knowles, instructional support associate, Department of Media Study; Reinhild Steingrover-McRae, visiting assistant professor, Modern Languages and Literatures, and Margarita Vargas, associate professor and chair, Modern Languages and Literatures.

Graduate assistant wanted to write for the Reporter
Applications are open for a 20-hour-a week position writing for the Reporter, beginning in January. The position is open to graduate students only, and offers a tuition scholarship for the spring semester, as well as a salary. Applicants must have excellent writing skills; newspaper experience is preferred.

Women's Club to sell holiday poinsettias
The annual poinsettia and wreath sale of the UB Women's Club is now in progress. The sale proceeds benefit the Grace Capen Academic Award Fund.

Plants in red, white and pink are available in pots in the following sizes: 3-1/2 inches ($1.50), 4-1/2 inches ($3.50), 6 inches ($5.50), 6-1/2 inches ($8.50). Hanging baskets are available in 10-inch size ($15) and 8 inches with side holes ($18).

The club also sells fresh balsam fir wreaths, which are available plain or decorated. Prices for the 12-inch wreaths (outside diameter 22-24 inches) are $7, plain, and $10, decorated. The 16-inch wreaths (outside diameter 28-30 inches) are $10, plain, and $15, decorated.

The deadline for orders is Nov. 30. Pickup will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Dec. 10 in the Center for Tomorrow. To order, call Winnie Doran at 839-9710.
