After falling behind by as much as 25 points early in the fourth quarter, the Bulls rallied behind a two-yard touchdown run by running back Anthony Swan and a five-yard reception by Kali Watkins, cutting the lead to 37-26. However, Hofstra recovered an onside kick with 1:54 remaining and ran out the clock to clinch the win.
The Bulls offense was able to move the ball, but failed to reach the end zone twice when in the red zone. UB moved to the Hofstra three-yard line on its second possession of the game, but Swan-who rushed 27 times for 68 yards and two touchdowns-was stopped for a one-yard loss on fourth and three.
The Bulls also failed on a fourth-and-12 play on the Hofstra 18-yard line when a pass intended for Swan from quarterback Chad Salisbury-who completed 24-of-35 passes for 348 yards and two touchdowns-fell incomplete. UB wide receivers Kali Watkins (six receptions, 114 yards and a touchdown) and Drew Haddad (nine receptions, 108 yards and a touchdown) both went over 100 yards receiving for the second straight game.
The Bulls are led by senior middle hitter Kathy Brinkworth, who is averaging 2.5 kills, 2.38 digs and 1.04 blocks per game.
