Need help urgently from a police officer?

Call 716-645-2222

On this page:

Once you have reported a crime, University Police will begin the investigative process.

Criminal Investigation Process

The criminal investigation process includes:

  • Taking the initial crime report and statements
  • Crime scene processing
  • Identification and apprehension of suspects

culminating in the judicial system.

Leave investigation to the police. You may inadvertently damage the process when you try to help.

University Police's Investigations Unit is staffed by four full-time investigators overseen by our inspector, each of whom handles a caseload of crimes against persons such as sex offenses, assaults and robberies, along with property crimes such as burglary, larceny and fraud.

Record Of a Criminal Investigation

Your University Police can provide you a letter regarding a check of this investigation, but it would not include any record of contact, arrest or conviction from other local, state or federal law enforcement agencies. Furthermore, this letter would not include, nor does it constitute, any check of an individual’s criminal history, if any.
