Education:

  • PhD, Social Work and Social Science, University of Michigan, 2002

Professional experience:

  • Assistant Professor, Social Work, Washington University, Saint Louis

What mentoring means to me:

As international student with limited English proficiency who had no clue about American academic culture, I had multiple challenges. It is a miracle that I survived in academia and became a tenured faculty member. I believe that guidance and support from my mentors made the miracle happen. It is time for me to pay it forward.

Topics I am willing to discuss with students:

Academic Culture

  • Dealing with politics and conflict with faculty or peers.
  • Decoding and demystifying academic culture and norms.

Other Topics

  • Job market experience as an international student.

Personal Experiences

  • Caregiving for children.
  • Experiences related to being a woman.
  • Experiences related to racial, ethnic, cultural and/or religious minority status.

Yunju adds: I am an Asian (Korean).

  • Non-U.S. citizen or immigrant experiences.
