What mentoring means to me:

Mentoring is one of the most important experiences students can encounter on their educational journey. I have been honored to learn from several mentors, my first and most fundamental to my success coming from my first year of my undergraduate degree. I have mentored many students in higher education and started a mentoring program for students in Educational Psychology and Statistics during my graduate student career at UB. I am eager to share my experiences and guidance that may be meaningful to others navigating their undergraduate, graduate, or professional careers here at UB.

Topics I am willing to discuss with students:

Academic Culture

  • Considering a non-academic path after grad school.
  • Dealing with politics and conflict with faculty or peers.
  • Decoding and demystifying academic culture and norms.
  • Taking a non-traditional path to grad school.
  • Uncertainty about staying in grad school.

Personal Experiences

  • Experiences related to being a woman.
  • Experiences related to mental health and/or abilities.
  • Experiences related to sexual and/or gender minority status.

Courtney adds: I am an active ally to the LGBTQIA+ community. I volunteer with Embrace WNY, serving the LGBTQ+ population in Buffalo. My research is dedicated to experiences of victimization of students who identify as LGBTQIA+.
